Sunset Cremation Urn for Ashes

Our Sunset Cremation Urn for Ashes is expertly handcrafted into a deep and round shape, resembling that of a honeypot which exudes the comfort of harmony and protection. The soft curves which help bring a more homely feel to any room, representing unity, love, and commitment. 

This urn for ashes is equipped with a lid which slips perfectly onto the top. There are two nodule-like hooks on the sides which allows a strong, red cord to be wrapped around to hold the lid of the urn in place, ensuring the safety of its precious contents. 

This cremation urn has been hand painted by our skilled artisan using a shiny glaze, creating a glossy finish. The urn has warm peach, red, and yellow tones. It also features a decorative floral print which goes up one side of the urn in a strip and eases onto the lid, ensuring that these two components come together to create a whole piece. The front of the urn is also decorated with bold paint lines and colours which resembles 50’s pop art.

The Raku firing technique consists of glazed ceramics which undergo a quick firing process at around 1000^C. The pottery is then removed from the kiln whilst they are still glowing red hot to be placed in a material that would cool the pieces rapidly. 

This can be done using materials that would readily catch fire, such as sawdust or paper, creating a ‘reduction’ atmosphere which consumes the oxygen available, creating carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide draws out oxygen from the clay and glaze, intensifying the colours and textures. This creates orange, red, copper, and gold tones.

The pottery can also be cooled down via a ‘oxidation’ atmosphere by submerging the piece into cool water. The oxygen in the water reacts with the metals in the clay and glaze to create a finish which often consists of blue and green tones. 

Ultimately, a myriad of colours are created within the glaze, and the extreme change in temperatures create a crackled look.
