Jupiter Cremation Urn for Ashes

Our Jupiter cremation urn for ashes is a traditional clay urn, which has been popular since the renaissance particularly in Tuscany. It is a simple and ageless design. 

This urn has a beautifully round circle chamber at the base, topped with a long narrow with a shallow cone-shaped lid. It has a beautiful terracotta colour to the piece which is topped with terra sigillata red gloss, an ultra-refined clay slip that gives the piece a soft sheen. This technique alludes to medieval medicinal earth and gives subtle clues of its Greek and Roman heritage where the terra sigillata was used instead of glaze.

The Saggar firing technique makes use of Iron(III), otherwise known as Ferric Chloride, a compound commonly used in etching copper circuit boards and water treatment. Each clay urn is coated and wrapped in raw materials such as copper wire, steel wool, ferns, sugar, salt, and aluminium foil before firing to 1100°C.

The foil then traps the fumes created as the materials burn away, which imprint themselves into the surface of the clay. Because of this, each piece is completely one of a kind, never to be reproduced. This is, of course, a feature and one of the many beautiful aspects making this Saggar cremation urn a beautiful piece of decor.
