Cat Memorial Gifts for a Friend or for Yourself

Quick answer: For a friend, the best cat memorial gifts are simple and ask nothing of them: a card that names the cat, a framed photograph, a donation in the cat's name. Keepsakes that hold ashes, such as a pendant, a charm bead or a small cat-shaped urn, are better chosen by the owner, or given only once you know the ashes came home and they would welcome one.

Cat memorial gifts are bought for two quite different people. One is a friend, a parent or a colleague whose cat has died, and you want them to know you noticed. The other is you, after your own cat has gone, looking for one thing to keep. The right gift is not the same for both.

So this guide is split by who the gift is for. Every product in it comes from our cat urns for ashes and the keepsake ranges beside it, and every size is taken from that product's own page.

A gift for a friend whose cat has died

A friend may have lived with the same cat for fifteen years, and most people outside the house will never have met it. That is why a small, specific gift lands well. Keep it to things that need no decision from them.

A card with the cat's name in it

Write the name. Add one detail if you have it: the spot on the windowsill, the way she came to the door when your car pulled up. Two lines are plenty. Leave out "at least" and leave out any talk of a new kitten.

A photograph in a frame

If you have a photograph of the cat, print it. A picture taken by someone else shows the cat as other people saw it.

The Pet Memorial Photo Frame in Walnut, Small is a wooden frame with a glossy walnut finish, real glass and an off-white mount. A stand at the back lets it sit on a shelf. Overall it is 23 cm high and 18 cm wide (9.1 by 7.1 in), takes a 15 by 20 cm photo (about 5.9 by 7.9 in), and the mount shows an opening of 9 by 14 cm (about 3.5 by 5.5 in). This frame holds no ashes and is made for indoor display.

A donation in the cat's name

For someone who would rather not have another object in the house, give to a cat charity or a rescue in the cat's name. Cornell University's Feline Health Center lists this among its ways to remember a cat: "Make a donation in your cat's name to an organization with importance to you" (Cornell Feline Health Center, Grieving the Loss of Your Cat, read October 22, 2026). The same page also suggests planting a tree or flowers and making a photo book.

Passing on where to find support

Sometimes the kindest thing to give is a phone number, sent quietly with the card.

United Kingdom

Cats Protection runs the Paws to Listen grief support service, described as "free and confidential", on 0800 024 94 94. The charity says "The phoneline is open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday excluding Bank Holidays" and that its volunteers are trained listeners rather than counselors (Cats Protection, Paws to Listen grief support, read October 22, 2026). Check the page for the current hours before you pass it on.

Something to keep after losing your own cat

When the gift is for yourself, you can choose something that holds a little of the ashes. Most cat keepsakes do, and that is the main question to settle first: do you want the ashes kept together in one urn, or a small amount kept apart, close to you?

A pendant with a cat on it

The Self-fill Cat Embrace Memorial Ashes Pendant is a round pendant in 925 sterling silver with rhodium plating, with a sculpted cat at its center. It is small, 2.3 cm high and 1.6 cm wide (0.91 by 0.63 in). The chamber holds a symbolic amount of ashes, a pinch rather than a share, and closes with a screw. A 46 cm (18 in) chain is included. You fill it at home, and our guide to self-fill ashes jewellery shows how.

A charm bead for a bracelet you already wear

The Self-fill Round Cat Memorial Ashes Charm Bead is a round sterling silver bead with a cat design, 1.4 cm across (about 0.55 in), and holds a symbolic amount. Its 4 mm opening fits most charm bracelets. No bracelet comes with it, so this suits someone who already wears one. There is more choice in our pet ashes jewellery.

A small urn shaped like a cat lying down

The Lying Cat Mini Urn for Ashes in Matte Black is a handmade ceramic cat lying at rest, in a soft black glaze. Size: 9 cm high and 17.5 cm long (3.6 by 6.9 in), holding 0.3 liters (about 18 cubic inches). Ashes go in through the base, with no bag needed. Its page calls this "a pet capacity, suited to a house cat rather than a larger animal" and lists it for indoor and outdoor display.

A sculpture of a cat held in two hands

For the main urn, the Loving Hands Cat Pet Urn for Ashes in White shows a sleeping cat curled up and cradled in softly shaped hands, in matte white porcelain. Capacity is 0.80 liters (about 49 cubic inches), and the piece stands 13.5 cm high and 14.5 cm wide (5.31 by 5.71 in). You unscrew the base to fill it.

A larger choice is the Cat Heart Pet Urn for Ashes in Grey and White: a dark grey porcelain heart with a white cat curled at its center, made in Italy. This one holds 1.6 liters (about 97.6 cubic inches), is 19 cm high and 21 cm wide (7.48 by 8.27 in), and closes with a screw in the base.

A farewell outdoors

Some owners want to let a little of the ashes go in the garden or a place the cat knew. The Paws to Paradise Eco Friendly Scattering Tube for Pet Ashes, Mini is made from recycled paper printed with paw prints crossing a beach toward a low sun over the sea, with no metal or plastic parts. It holds 0.33 liters (about 20 cubic inches), which is a smaller portion of a pet's ashes, and it is small enough to hold in one hand. You take off the lid, push in the perforated tab and tip it gently.

Which gift is wrong, and when

Anything that holds ashes is wrong if the cat was buried, if no ashes came back from the crematorium, or if you simply do not know. Ask, or choose the frame, a card or a donation.

A pendant or charm bead is the wrong choice for someone who wants all of the ashes kept in one place. A symbolic amount is tiny. Jewellery is also a poor fit for anyone who would worry every day about losing it.

A small urn is wrong if it must hold everything and the cat was a large one. Compare the capacity with what the crematorium returned, and use our urn size guide if you are unsure. Among the urns above, capacity runs from 0.3 to 1.6 liters.

And timing matters more than the object. A card can go straight away. A gift that holds ashes is better a few weeks later, or on the day the ashes come home, and it helps to say there is no hurry to fill it.

For gifts after the death of a person, see our guide to gifts for a grieving friend. If the loss is a dog, our dog memorial gifts guide covers the same ground.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good gift for someone whose cat has died?

A card that uses the cat's name, a printed photograph in a frame, or a donation to a cat charity in the cat's name. None of these involve the ashes, so anyone can give them.

Is it all right to give a cat urn as a gift?

Only if you know the cat was cremated, the ashes were returned, and the owner would like one. If you are not sure, ask, or give something with no ashes involved and let them choose their own urn later.

How much ash does a cat memorial pendant hold?

A symbolic amount, which is a pinch. The pendant and charm bead in this guide are made for a very small portion, so the rest of the ashes stay in an urn, are scattered or are buried.

Will a small cat urn hold all of my cat's ashes?

That depends on the cat and on what the crematorium returned. The Lying Cat Mini Urn holds 0.3 liters and its page describes that as suited to a house cat; the Loving Hands Cat urn holds 0.80 liters and the Cat Heart urn 1.6 liters.

When should I give a cat remembrance gift?

Send a card straight away. A keepsake is often kinder a few weeks later, on the day the ashes come home, or on the cat's birthday or the first anniversary.
