These crystalline glaze urns for ashes have been formed on a potter’s wheel and fired in an electric kiln at scorching temperatures of around 1280°C for a couple of hours. Once a liquid matrix is formed from the molten glaze, the kiln is then cooled down to the temperature at which the crystals will grow, which is usually around 1050 - 1150°C. The crystals take around 3-5 hours to grow.

When the crystals cool down, they obtain their final appearance and will not change. The modifications of the appearance of the crystals are a result of the specific chemical compositions of the glaze. The crystal formers are Zinc Oxide and Silica which combine to create Zinc Silicate. The shape of the crystals formed on cremation urn also differ depending on the different temperatures.

A special ring must be made for each urn for ashes as well as a plate to catch the glaze that runs off, in order to protect the shelves of the kiln. This must then be removed and the bottom is grinded to make it smooth.

Ultimately, each crystalline piece is delicately handcrafted, creating unique and original designs which are one of a kind and impossible to replicate. As the pieces are created on a pottery wheel, the size and measurements won’t be exact.

8) The Pampas Ashes Keepsake Urn

This urn has been beautifully handcrafted, focussing on serenity with it’s soft white hues and very detailed etchings which give the urn depth and individuality. The name of this urn comes from the Pampas grass which is soft and creamy white, which reminds you of nature.

There may be variations between the images shown and the urn you receive, the process is unique and the natural reactions happen differently each time, leading to the patterns developing differently. This, of course, makes each Raku urn unique and distinct. The shape, size, and colour variations will however be the same as pictured

The Raku firing technique consists of glazed ceramic urns for ashes which undergo a quick firing process at around 1000^C. The pottery cremation urn is then removed from the kiln whilst they are still glowing red hot to be placed in a material that would cool the pieces quickly.

This can be done using materials that would readily catch fire, such as sawdust or paper, creating a ‘reduction’ atmosphere which consumes the oxygen available, creating carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide draws out oxygen from the clay and glaze, intensifying the colours and textures.

This creates orange, red, copper, and gold tones. The pottery can also be cooled down via a ‘oxidation’ atmosphere by submerging the piece into cool water. The oxygen in the water reacts with the metals in the clay and glaze to create a finish which often consists of blue and green tones. Ultimately, a myriad of colours are created within the glaze, and the extreme change in temperatures create a crackled look.

9) The Dawn Ashes Keepsake Urn

There may be variations between the images shown and the urn you receive, the process is unique and the natural reactions happen differently each time, leading to the patterns developing differently. This, of course, makes each Saggar urn unique and distinct. The shape, size, and colour variations will however be the same as pictured.

The Saggar firing technique makes use of Iron(III), otherwise known as Ferric Chloride, a compound commonly used in etching copper circuit boards and water treatment. Each clay cremation urn for ashes is coated and wrapped in raw materials such as copper wire, steel wool, ferns, sugar, salt, and aluminium foil before firing to 1100°C.

The foil then traps the fumes created as the materials burn away, which imprint themselves into the body of the clay. Because of this, each piece is completely one of a kind and unique never to be reproduced. This is, of course, a feature and one of the many beautiful aspects making this Saggar cremation urn a beautiful piece of décor.
